Understanding the Root Causes of Chronic Fatigue and Myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME): A Functional Perspective
Overview of Chronic Fatigue and Myalgic encephalomyelitis
As a health coach, one of the most common—and complex—concerns I hear from clients is persistent exhaustion. Chronic fatigue or Myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) isn’t just “feeling tired.” It’s a deep, unrelenting energy drain that no amount of sleep seems to fix. From a functional health perspective, this kind of fatigue is often a sign that the body’s energy production system is under strain.
At the core of this issue are the mitochondria—the tiny powerhouses in our cells responsible for generating energy. When these mitochondria are compromised by factors such as poor nutrition, toxin exposure, chronic infections, or long-term stress, energy production suffers. Add in issues like poor sleep quality, nutrient deficiencies (like magnesium, B12, or CoQ10), sluggish thyroid function, or unresolved viral and bacterial infections, and the body simply can't keep up.
In this blog series, we’ll explore how to identify the underlying causes of fatigue and begin restoring energy naturally—by supporting mitochondrial health, reducing toxic load, and rebalancing the body’s core systems, step by step.
Symptoms
As a health coach, I work with many clients experiencing chronic fatigue that goes far beyond everyday tiredness. It’s a complex condition with a wide range of symptoms that affect both body and mind. Understanding these symptoms is the first step. Then, we focus on gentle, practical strategies to support energy, resilience, and daily life.
Common Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Persistent, unexplained fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
Unrefreshing sleep, no matter how many hours are slept
Post-exertional malaise (PEM) – worsening of symptoms after activity
Cognitive issues ("brain fog") – poor memory, concentration, and focus
Orthostatic intolerance – dizziness or lightheadedness when standing
Muscle and joint pain without visible inflammation
Headaches that are new, more frequent, or more severe
Sore throat or tender lymph nodes, often without infection
Digestive issues, such as bloating, nausea, or IBS-like symptoms
Sensitivity to light, sound, temperature, or smell
