Bringing a new baby into the world is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience. Many parents seek osteopathic care when their baby seems unsettled, uncomfortable, or difficult to soothe, or simply to support their baby’s comfort and wellbeing after birth.

At Arturo Fernandez Osteopath, baby osteopathy appointments are gentle, calm, and always adapted to your baby’s individual needs.

What Is Baby Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession in the UK that uses gentle hands-on techniques alongside advice and support to help improve movement, comfort, and function within the body. Osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

When working with babies, treatment is extremely gentle and often uses cranial osteopathic techniques involving light touch and careful observation. Babies are treated fully clothed where possible, and parents remain involved throughout the appointment.

Why Do Parents Bring Their Babies to an Osteopath?

Parents commonly seek osteopathic care for babies who may have:

  • General unsettledness or excessive crying

  • Difficulty settling or sleeping

  • Feeding difficulties or discomfort during feeding

  • Preference to turn their head to one side

  • Tension or stiffness after birth

  • Flattening or asymmetry of the head shape

  • General musculoskeletal tension or discomfort

Osteopaths do not claim to cure medical conditions in babies. Instead, treatment aims to support comfort, relaxation, movement, and overall function using gentle manual therapy and advice. If symptoms suggest an underlying medical condition, referral to a GP, midwife, health visitor, paediatrician, or another healthcare professional may be recommended.

Referral and Insurance

Most babies attend through self-referral, meaning parents can book directly without needing to see a GP first.

Some families are referred by:

  • GPs

  • Midwives

  • Health visitors

  • Lactation consultants

  • Paediatric consultants

  • Other healthcare professionals

Many private health insurance providers, including BUPA and other major insurers, may contribute towards osteopathic treatment depending on your policy. In most cases, you may need a GP or consultant referral before claiming through insurance, so it is always worth checking directly with your provider before booking.

What Happens During the First Consultation?

The first appointment usually lasts longer than follow-up sessions to allow time for a full case history and assessment.

This may include discussing:

  • Pregnancy and birth history

  • Feeding and sleeping patterns

  • Development and milestones

  • Medical history

  • Any concerns you may have as parents

Your osteopath will then carry out a gentle assessment of your baby’s posture, movement, comfort, and areas of tension. Treatment is adapted entirely to your baby’s age and comfort level.

Babies may sleep, feed, cuddle, or move around during treatment — appointments are always baby-led.

If your osteopath feels your baby would benefit from further medical assessment, they will discuss this with you and help guide you towards the appropriate healthcare professional.

Follow-Up Consultations

Follow-up appointments are usually shorter and focus on reviewing progress, reassessing your baby, and continuing treatment where appropriate.

Parents are often given practical advice about:

  • Feeding positions

  • Carrying and handling

  • Tummy time

  • Sleep positioning

  • General comfort and development

Treatment plans vary depending on the baby and presenting symptoms, but many babies are typically seen for between 1–6 sessions over approximately 6–8 weeks.

Possible Benefits and Side Effects

Many parents report improvements in their baby’s comfort, relaxation, settling, feeding, or general wellbeing following treatment. However, responses vary between babies and no specific outcomes can be guaranteed.

After treatment, some babies may:

  • Sleep more than usual

  • Be slightly unsettled or clingy

  • Feed more frequently

  • Seem tired for 24–48 hours

These responses are usually mild and temporary as babies adjust following treatment.

Treatment for babies is designed to be gentle and non-forceful. Your osteopath will always explain what they are doing and obtain parental consent before assessment and treatment.

A Gentle, Individual Approach

Every baby is different. Osteopathic care focuses on understanding your baby as an individual and working alongside parents to support comfort, movement, and development in a calm and reassuring environment.

If you are unsure whether osteopathy may be suitable for your baby, you are always welcome to get in touch to discuss your concerns before booking an appointment.
