Introducing BonePilot: Why I Built a Bone Health Assessment Platform
Your Bone Health Coach
Over the past two years, I have spent more time learning about osteoporosis than I ever expected.
As an osteopath, I was already familiar with the musculoskeletal system, exercise and rehabilitation. However, nothing quite prepares you for becoming a patient yourself.
My journey began when MRI scans identified multiple vertebral compression fractures. Further investigations revealed osteoporosis in my lumbar spine, with a DEXA T-score of -3.6. What followed was a long and sometimes confusing process involving blood tests, bone turnover markers, endocrine investigations, fracture risk assessments, exercise modifications and treatment discussions.
Like many people diagnosed with osteoporosis, I found myself asking questions such as:
What does a DEXA scan really tell me?
How important are CTX and P1NP results?
What can bone turnover markers reveal about treatment response?
How much should I exercise?
Which supplements are worth considering?
How do I interpret conflicting test results?
What questions should I ask my doctor?
The more I learned, the more I realised how fragmented osteoporosis information can be.
Information exists in many places, but patients often need to bring together imaging results, blood tests, lifestyle factors, medications and fracture history to understand the bigger picture.
That challenge eventually inspired the creation of BonePilot.
What Is BonePilot?
BonePilot is a free osteoporosis assessment and education platform designed to help people better understand their bone health journey.
It is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace medical advice.
Instead, it aims to help users organise and understand the many factors involved in bone health.
The Full BonePilot Assessment
The main assessment guides users through a structured review of their bone health history.
Start here:
https://bonepilot.com/assessment/full
The assessment explores multiple factors that may influence bone health and provides educational feedback to help users better understand areas they may wish to discuss with their healthcare professional.
The Full Assessment includes:
Osteoporosis risk factors
Fracture history
DEXA scan findings
Bone turnover markers
Lifestyle and nutrition
Exercise considerations
Medication discussions
Monitoring progress over time
The goal is simple:
To help people become more informed participants in their own healthcare.
Understanding Bone Turnover Markers
One area that caused me significant confusion during my own journey was the interpretation of bone turnover markers.
CTX, P1NP and osteocalcin are increasingly discussed in osteoporosis care, yet many patients receive these results with little explanation of what they mean.
To address this, I created a dedicated Bone Marker Assessment Tool:
https://bonepilot.com/assessment/bone-markers
This section helps users understand the relationship between bone formation and bone resorption markers and how these measurements may be used to monitor treatment response and changes in bone metabolism.
Why I Built It
BonePilot was born from a very personal experience.
I found myself navigating vertebral fractures, DEXA scans, CTX and P1NP measurements, endocrinology consultations and discussions about treatment options.
Along the way, I learned an enormous amount from healthcare professionals, researchers, patient organisations and educators.
I also realised that many people facing osteoporosis feel overwhelmed by the volume of information they are expected to understand.
BonePilot is my attempt to make that journey a little easier.
If it helps someone better understand their diagnosis, ask better questions at their next appointment or feel less alone while navigating osteoporosis, then it has achieved its purpose.
Thank You
I would like to thank the many organisations, clinicians, researchers and patients whose educational work has contributed to my own understanding of bone health.
BonePilot continues to evolve, and feedback is always welcome.
